One Bite at a Time—A Scout Leaders Story

ELEPHANT_DISH Sometimes you think you’ve bitten off more than you can chew and here I go again. Several years ago I was asked by one of my fellow Scout leaders to head up Summer Camp for the 2009 summer. The Scouts had already made their choice, and the initial reservation payment had been made. It would be my job to make sure the final payment was made on time along with making sure we had a national tour permit, copy of our council insurance, updated medical forms on all fifty-eight people going, adult leaders to go that are trained, transportation, swimmers test taken prior to camp and various things, not to mention the Scouts merit badge class selection. Lots of moving parts. I heard Steven Covey say: “ How do you eat an elephant?” He answered his own question, “One bite at a time.”

I took to reading the Camp Hale Leaders guide and while I did not put it to memory I got my spork and knife and started on the elephant that was Boy Scout Summer Camp 2009. Once I had figured out all the requirements for the camp I started looking for some help and lucky for me there were a lot of people that were ready to lend a hand.

Bite number one was the medical forms and our medical form coordinator was beyond spectacular, everyone should be so lucky. Now the Boy Scouts of America likes its paperwork and the medical forms are no exception, buttttttttt this is a transition year to the “NEW’, “EASIER FORM”. I think I need a bigger knife or a smaller elephant. Joyce, didn’t shudder or complain she had her own knife and spork and started slicing away at getting the medical forms compiled on time. That’s physicals, medication list, and consent form for every scout and adult leader…fifty-eight times. In addition to compiling all this into an alphabetic binder for the camp we tried something a little different. We had a folder for each driver with their rider’s medical forms. The drive was over three hundred-eighty-five miles and crossed over into Oklahoma. This folder also had consent forms, national tour permit, troop insurance and phone numbers for all the adult leaders including the committee chair and Joyce herself. If something were to go wrong that driver could take car of the Scouts in his care. No one can see the future, but we have to follow the Scout motto “Be Prepared” and it’s a good thing we did because we had over seven Scouts come down with a twenty four hour bug while we where at camp and the odds were that the drivers were going to have that bug as a passenger. It happened we did have boys that were still feeling the effects of the bug on the ride home and two confirmed sick once we arrived home; one tenderfoot scout and me.

So many moving parts it was time to get more help. Bill stepped up to help split the boys into the cars they would ride in to and from camp. He also worked on getting adult leaders to drive and getting a trailer big enough to haul all our stuff. Mr. Hall allowed us to use his trailer and that kept us from taking two. With fifty-eight people and a weeks worth of stuff you have to have room to haul it. On top of all that Bill pulled the trailer with his pick up; like I said lots of moving parts.

John took up the charge of being our on site medical officer. He dispensed any daily medicines and when the bug hit he was the one that took the lead on caring for the scouts. David also helped keep an eye on scouts and made sure they didn’t get dehydrated. Lots of moving parts

We had to have all our adult leaders Youth Protection Trained and attempt to get all our Scouts and adult leaders swim tested before we go to camp. Randy took both these projects on and was awesome. He e-mailed and re-e-mailed the adult leaders to get the paperwork needed to show that they had indeed taken the necessary training.

The elephant didn’t taste too good at first, but with the help from a few of my scouting friends we were able to find the right sauce and put that big fellow down. As adult leaders we tackle the elephant so the scouts can work on fun with a purpose. That IS the vision of the Boy Scouts. Everyone had a good time; even the scouts that were slowed down by the bug that was going around. Lots of badges were earned, photos were taken, new friends were made and memories for a lifetime, well their were plenty.

Would I tackle the elephant again? You bet ya, we made a difference in the lives of the future of America. And we can make that difference in Magnolia, Texas, Charlotte, North Carolina and where ever there is a boy that wants to have “fun” the purpose is an added bonus.

This Realtors Perspective

When people look for homes they don’t realize it sometimes, but what they are really looking for is a place to call their own WITHIN an area they can call their own.  You may buy the home, but you not only own the home, you also OWN the community.  And that is your quote of the day…

You may buy the home, but you not only own the home, you also OWN the community.

What organizations make up the community you own?  The school district, that’s an organization of learning and that helps your property value.  The home owners association, they make sure the rules are enforced, which encourages people to buy in the neighborhood.  Churches of different religious background are in your community they help keep your moral compass pointing North.  The Lions Club, The Masons, The Optimist Club are all geared toward community involvement and improvement.  The Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts are they active in your community?  Own your community, if your looking for a home, check out the clubs and organizations that are meeting in that community.  If your a Mason, transfer your membership.  If you can’t find a Boy Scout Troop or a Cub Scout Pack, start one up.  You can make your community the best one in the World…………….

Buying or selling a home…. Choosing a REALTOR

Dynamic Business Team Choosing a REALTOR is not your full time job, but it should be the FULL time job of your REALTOR to be A REALTOR.  If you have made the commitment to buy or sell real estate you should have a REALTOR that is committed to forming a strong business relationship with you.  Here are some ideas on choosing a REALTOR:

1) Personal referrals—Ask your closest friends who sold them their house.  Now think about this for a minute.  They bought that house five years ago, that’s a long time.  Your friend will have to think about it and get back with you.  They might have forgotten their REALTOR because they haven’t heard from them in five years.  Hmmmm, you are going to want a professional that is dedicated to serving your needs—before, during and after the sale.  Personal referrals are the best, because you have a friend you trust telling you that this is someone that they trust.  Key questions to follow up with your friend:  Would you buy your next home with this REALTOR?  Would you sell this home with this REALTOR?  Trust is the key, would you want to use the hairstylist of a friend whose hair looks like a rats nest?  If you don’t like what their stylist has done with their hair you’re probably not going to want that stylist touching your hair.  I’m just saying.

2) Advertising—Think about the last time you bought something advertised on TV or in a magazine.  What were they selling?  Did you buy it because it filled a need or did you buy it for some other reason?  Just because a REALTOR has a billboard, park bench, TV commercial, shopping cart or Home owners newsletter does not mean their work ethic fits with your personality or needs.

3) Websites, Blogs and Facebook—This is separate from advertising because if done correctly they serve a REAL function to you.  Websites, Blogs and Facebook serve three functions: 1) Information 2) Call to action 3) communication.  As your researching your REALTOR; are they providing information, communication opportunities and a call to action?  These are all important and useful in your search for a home or in the marketing of your home.

4) Communication—It is extremely important that your REALTOR communicate with you in a way that you WANT to be communicated in.  E-mail, texting, phone calls to the cell phone at work, phone calls to the work phone, phone calls to the home phone, facebook messages and twitter tweets.  Who is number one in this situation…..YOU ARE.  Make it a point to find out what communication methods are available.  If you love to receive text messages, you need to make sure that your REALTOR is on the same page.  Your REALTOR also needs to understand how handy you are with a computer and if you have access to a fax machine.

5) Home Search—Your REALTOR needs to be a part of your home search, but not the beginning middle and end.  Here’s what I mean… you have to be an active participant in your home search.  In order to get the home of your dreams you need to be part of the game.  Suite up and get in the game.  Your Realtor is a major player, notice that I didn’t say coach.  Your the player coach.  Your REALTOR is the player agent, the pinch hitter, the announcer, the cheerleader, the medic and the relief pitcher.  They are what you need them to be at that moment in time and sometimes they will be everything and all at once.

6) Availability—Your REALTOR should be available to you on your schedule.  You are the client, you are important and you should be given priority.  This is one way that a full time dedicated Real Estate Professional is different from the part time REALTOR.   They have another job four to eight hours a day, when do they have time for you?

7) Eating Real Estate Every Meal—Another way a full time dedicated Real Estate Professional is different from the part time REALTOR is that they are always working on Real Estate.  Their focus is directed at being the best REALTOR they can be.  They have one vision of success and that is to help you achieve your Real Estate goals .  This can be seen through the weekly improvement meetings that they attend.  The professional company they keep.  The on going education that a full time REALTOR takes is typically more than the State requires.  Even the amount and type of information that they provide to potential clients on a regular basis.

These are my seven tips for you based on clients, friends and family.  You have a tough choice before you.  Some where along the way you will need a REALTOR.  Take the time to learn who your working with.  Ask questions, conduct job interviews.  A REALTOR that does not want to be a part of your interview process…hmmmm…you make the call.  It’s your dream, who is going to be a part of your team to make it a reality?

They have a wide range of meat choices: beef, pork, chicken, market made sausage (on site), small selection of seafood, wild game meats include—deer, elk and buffalo. They wrap the meat for you based if you’re going to eat it today or put it in the freezer for next week. Many ready to cook items are available: pre-marinated steaks, stuffed pork chops, chicken Diablo’s, just to name a few. They also have a small selection of grocery items to finish out the meal; potatoes, spaghetti sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, drinks and more. Wild game processing is available.

Fifty-Two linear feet of meat counter for fresh cut meats. They have three, four door freezers. A 20×10 walk in freezer and a 10×7 walk in freezer in addition to a 8x8x20 freezer. With all that freezer space they are bound to have what you’re looking for.

Ainsworth sells gift certificates. WOW, what a great gift. Speaking of great gifts, Valentines Day is coming up and it has been a growing holiday for the sale of meat. Think about it, it’s a perfect time for the men to step it up and flex those cooking muscles and show their lady they love them. A romantic dinner at home with her favorite cut of meat.

Don’t know what cut of meat to choose? No problem, one of the best things about visiting Ainsworth is that they will educate you on the type of meat and how best to cook it. Education was the inspiration for this blog. A couple of weeks ago I made a trip to my local meat market (Ainsworth Meats). I was on a serious mission, to find the right meat to cook a chicken fried steak. Unfortunately it had been at least five years since I had attempted this feat. They not only helped me with the right meat, but gave me tips on creating what ended up being the perfect batter. It is delicious.

Good meat, excellent customer service, education and advice….Ainsworth Meats the local meat market in Magnolia, Texas. Located a half mile South of Farmers Market 1488 on the West side of Farmers Market 2978. Check them out, you’ll be glad I sent you.

This REALTORS Perspective:

There is nothing like a cook out to bring the neighborhood together. If your Home Owners Association is planning a National Night Out get involved, sign up to participate. If they are not participating in National Night Out, get it started in your subdivision. Good neighbors make good communities and good communities have higher resale value. This is a great way to get out and meet your neighbors, who knows you might have more than just the neighborhood in common. The National Night Out idea is simple, know your neighbors and help keep your community safe.  Host a cook out and invite the neighbors or call me and I’ll host one for you. No joke I would love the opportunity to host your next neighborhood get together. No worries, no pressure, just me trying to help you and your neighbors to…………..
